Programmable Lighting Controls

The PerfectSense Low Voltage Momentary Wall Switches are a series of aesthically pleasing push button wall switches that can be mounted in commercial or residential applications. The 51300L dimmer features a mini paddle switch to turn your lights off or on and returning them to your desired level at any time. Task lighting, desk lights are low voltage sometimes. This is the wire that goes up to your light fixture. It is excellent for any application that requires high voltage switching through low voltage controls. If you already have light bulbs and are looking for a dimmer switch, find the product page for the bulbs and check the PDF for a list of compatible dimmers to choose from. Your switches and plate may be installed horizontally instead of vertically, but take a close look at the switches and see what looks familiar. Dimmers for line-voltage lighting are also less expensive than those used with low-voltage lighting. 3 Australian light switches and a “neon” indicator—in a 4-gang wall-plate. We compare that low-voltage-switching electrical system and its wiring and fusing requirements to contemporary low-voltage circuits used in buildings to power low-voltage devices such as downlights. The Remcon relays work with and are safe to use with Touch Plate light switches. The 3 wires may also be soldered to the back of old style switches. The low-voltage wiring system uses small-gauge copper wires connected to low-voltage switches to switch on and off relays which in turn control the operation of lights and where desired, electrical receptacles, and other 120-Volt equipment in homes. The SENSORWORX family of wall switches provides a simple yet cost-effective lighting control solution for many retrofit applications. The transformer for low-voltage lighting is either built into the fixture or located remotely. You might have a light triggered by motion on your drive-way, some porch lights around the house and some path or outdoor landscape lighting. The wattage rating of a transformer should be the same or higher than the combined wattage of the lighting system. But owners of buildings with the original systems installed may find themselves faced with low-voltage switches, relays, or transformers that no longer operate. Kyle Switch Plates sells replacement parts for all of the above systems, and the options vary between systems. When used with 3-way and 4-way switches, the lights can be turned on to dimmer level or off from many locations. Now you said that there was 3 switches in this room and that a fxiture had never been installed in that room. In my case, I had a 240v wire that connected some garden lights and the led stair lights. Product Description LVS low voltage switch, Type: Latching, Number of Buttons: 4, Pilot: No Pilot, Color: Gray. Once you know which system you have – GE , Bryant , Touch Plate , Remcon , or Sierra – you can buy brand new parts from Kyle Switch Plates They also have wiring guides and can help you over the phone if you’re not sure which replacement parts go with your system. Outdoor low voltage lighting provide a pleasant alternative to glaring floodlights. Product Description LVS low voltage switch, Type: Momentary, Number of Buttons: 1, Pilot: No Pilot, Color: Ivory. In the UK, putting 13 amp BS 1363 sockets on a lighting circuit is discouraged (although not outright prohibited), but 2 amp or 5 amp BS 546 outlets are often put on lighting circuits to allow control of free-standing lamps from the room’s light switches. In these systems light switches control lighting contactors , a relay that allows the manual light switch to operate on a lower voltage or with smaller wiring than would be required in the main lighting circuit. It’s table lamps, and most ceiling fixtures, chandeliers, are line voltage. If same-brand hardware replacements are not available to replace your damaged or nonfunctional low voltage electrical equipment, read our Low Voltage Switch Compatibility guide to see if other brands of low voltage switches can be used in your wiring system. The Pro Junction Hub accepts up to 7 fixtures, The Zone Control Hub and the Pro Micro-Junction Hub each accepts 4 fixtures. So for energy reasons they’re getting rid of it. MR16s, halogens, was kind of the ruling light source, and what’s going on now is LEDs are now sort of usurping its position… The LEDs are very expensive 2018 Editor’s Note: This isn’t the case anymore , and they haven’t completely filled out all the different categories that are being done by the low-voltage light bulbs right now. If your unsure about what parts are compatible with your system, just call Kyle Switch Plates and they can walk you through the process of purchasing compatible replacement parts for your specific low voltage lighting system. And since they’re low voltage (you can literally add wires and lights to the system while it’s operating), they’re safe to use and install. For example, Touch-Plate informs us that he Touch-Plate® relay (2500-B) is a single coil, 28VDC latching relay, whereas the the GE® relay (RR-7) is a dual coil, 24VAC latching relay, and the Remcon® relays (depending on the style) are a single or dual coil relay with an internal power supply for each relay.

light switch manufacturers

It’s a type of lamp that they used initially on electronic equipment and they started using it for signal lights, like when you have a controlled intersection, when you have an automobile traffic. Designed to control and dim 0-10V dimmable light sources such as LED drivers and fluorescent ballasts, this low voltage dimmer switch complements decorator style switches and outlets while providing fine tuning to low voltage light dimming capabilities. What we’re going to focus on are 24V electromagnetic ‘ice cube’ relays that close a switch between common and ‘normally open’ when 24 volts is applied to ‘the coil’. Often a two conductor and GND is ran between light fixtures and a pair dropped down to the switch from the light point, one of the drop pair is connect to L1 the other becomes the switch wire. These transformers should be compatible with standard (non-microprocessor) Diva®, Nova T ®, and Skylark® two-wire controls. Only one switch will control all outputs, so you do not need multiple switches unless you need a section of lighting with an individual control such as a dimmer. And light is more effectively concentrated where it’s needed, which can reduce the number of fixtures needed for a particular lighting scheme. I usually plan for a load (the sum of the wattage of all the lights on the circuit) on any transformer of no more than 80 percent of the transformer rating (this is called derating). The magazine ran for 25 years and was a go-to source in the lighting industry for news, product introductions and design trends. For low-voltage installations, this is when the inspector will specifically check to see if the wiring is Class 2 compliant. If your home was built in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s, you may have a General Electric Low Voltage Lighting System installed in your home. Put the general lighting and task lighting on one circuit and the decorative lighting on another. Bracket Mount switchplates are only compatible with the new GE low voltage RS2 switches, not the original GE or Bryant switches, and require a new bracket. JJ: You can either re-wire that entire individual circuit to use Touch-Plate® components, or, as Touch-Plate Lighting recommends, replace all of the older GE® or Remcon® relays in the home with Touch-Plate® relays. Chances are you have this circuit in your home, where you can toggle an overhead light on or off from either of two switches located on opposite ends of the room. Once the rough-in inspection is passed, you can then complete the installation with insulation, walls, switches and fixtures before the final inspection. If a home has already been wired to have an electrical control center or many-way switching of lights or outlets (say 4 or 5 way switching) the wire cost of converting to 120V would be substantial. Product Description LVS low voltage switch, Type: Momentary, Number of Buttons: 4, Pilot: No Pilot, Color: Ivory. Do not mix magnetic and electronic transformers on the same dimming circuit. The low-voltage switching platform consists of relay panels which are typically mounted in the electrical closet. Important: Before selecting a dimmer, determine what type of transformer is in the lighting fixture. Product Description LVS low voltage switch, Type: Momentary, Number of Buttons: 1, Pilot: No Pilot, Color: White. Most low-voltage transformers have their own mounting systems, so you can attach them to stakes outside your home. And the other advantage for recessed cans is that there are different types of lenses that can be put in front of low voltage — some line voltage lamps have that but more usually in the low voltage field — so you can change the way the light is. So not only do you have all these beam spreads, but you also have these effects you can create: You can soften the beam, you can stretch it out, you can do all sorts of things with it. So it’s great for lighting artwork, for creating mood and accent, that sort of thing. This system was popular and was installed in many homes between 1960 a nd 1985, and it continues in use today, often in the form of 12-V low-voltage lighting and downlight fixtures. White wires (4) are the neutral, or the return for the power. If you experience any of these symptoms, turn off the lights and troubleshoot because chances are there’s nothing wrong with the dimmer or the lights, the two just aren’t meant to be friends. In principle, it is easy to design silent switches in which the mechanical contacts do not directly control the current, but simply signal a solid-state device such as a thyristor to complete the circuit. It saves wire and is OK for short chains of fixtures, but you can run into trouble with voltage loss. Programmable RGB LEDs provide status feedback for lighting and other devices in the system. And since it’s low voltage lighting, it’s safe to use and install, even for beginners.

Until 2001, UK wiring regulations required that all bathroom switches were operated by pull cords. Otherwise we’d have to install new, much heavier gauge #14 or #12 electrical wires to support 120V switching directly. 5. A dimmer controlling an inductive load such as a magnetic transformer is also subjected to large voltage spikes and current surges. The fixtures put out less light than line-voltage fixtures, and if the distance from the transformer to the farthest fixture is 100 feet or more, voltage drop can cause a dim, yellow light unless you use special installation techniques. Miscellaneous Switches and Dimmers. Touch switches have no moving parts and electronically switch the light circuit. Lutron manufactures low-voltage dimmers for low-voltage fixtures that use magnetic transformers. 4. While some ELV transformers are labeled as dimmable with standard incandescent dimmers” Lutron does not recommend this because the best dimming performance is achieved with Lutron® ELV dimmers or GRAFIK Eye® system controls. You can also buy Despard cover plates for your old and new Despard switches. Transformers reduce your home’s standard line voltage for use with low-voltage fixtures. Each switch is connected to it’s own relay (unless two switches have been wired together to a single relay for 3-way functionality). Note that your old switches may have wires attached via screw terminals, as shown here. Walk into any home center or garden center this spring and you’re guaranteed to run into a towering display of outdoor low voltage lighting. Whether you just want to buy a Kichler In-Line Low Voltage Light Switch or shop for your entire home, has a zillion things home. Lutron offers dimmers for both load types in a variety of product families. 3-Way Dimmer with Switches – 3-way dimmer adjust the light level from one location. Note that if you have more than 7 fixtures in a zone, you can use two hub connectors – the first hub connects to the transformer, the second hub connects to the first. Transformers typically require a minimum combined wattage in order to operate the lighting system effectively, and without flickering or humming. Power controlled by this switch. Product Description LVS low voltage switch, Type: Latching, Number of Buttons: 3, Pilot: No Pilot, Color: Ivory. The rough-in inspection consists of checking that all wiring is properly installed before any switches, fixtures, insulation and walls are added. If you are updating your broken, discontinued Bryant or GE low voltage light switches, or you’ve already updated to the new GE RS2 switches, you’ll need to buy new low voltage switch plates to fit the new switches. If your switches look like any of these original GE, Bryant or new GE low voltage parts, you will replace your relays, transformers, switches and switch plates with the new GE parts that we carry. AC power comes in on two wires, the hot and the neutral. Test each light fixture for its voltage level with a digital voltage meter (about $25 at Radio Shack). You can purchase New Style GE Low Voltage Switch Plates for your new switches and the switches will snap directly into the plate. The new switches snap into these cover plates, eliminating the need for a bracket. Each has pros and cons, but except for very large residential projects, low-voltage systems are usually a better choice. It allows for great lighting control while reducing energy costs. You can use Touch-Plate® switches in place of three-wire switches, but you will need two Touch-Plate® buttons for every one three-wire switch. Power window switches are a common example. Use waterproof pond lights for illuminating pools, fountains and other water features; offset path lights for lighting walkways; cone lights for highlighting both walkways and the surrounding plants; tree-mounted spotlights for simulating moonlight; and flood lights for illuminating trees, buildings and other large elements. Note: Line voltage incandescent and low-voltage fixtures can be mixed on the same circuit, but the correct low-voltage dimmer (for the given low-voltage load) must be used. Reverse phase control is for use with either capacitive (ELV transformers) or resistive (incandescent) load types. Figure 1. Task lighting can be a small work light for checking to see if the steaks are medium rare (top), or a chandelier that lights a friendly game of Texas Hold ‘Em (bottom). Check the building first for for sticking low-voltage switches. Product Description LVS low voltage switch, Type: Momentary, Number of Buttons: 2, Pilot: No Pilot, Color: Ivory. Equalizes voltage at fixtures. Due to the higher efficiency of ELV transformers, Lutron® ELV dimmers are rated in watts (W), which is the lamp load connected to the transformer. If you want to put ten 20-watt lights on a circuit, make a tee connection with five lights on one line and five on the other.

Most systems are comprised of transformers, latching relays, and momentary switches. Sonoff SV low voltage remote switch transmits data to a cloud platform through the WiFi router, which enables customers to remotely control all the connected appliances, via the mobile application eWeLink. The farther a light is from the transformer (and the more lights installed between it and the transformer), the less light it will put out. Learn more detailed information about the various types of replacement switch plates and other parts below. BTW, if there is power in the ceiling box you can wire it so that the fan is “always hot” and is controlly by the pull string and the light is controlled by the wall switch. Low voltage, on the other hand, uses smaller light bulbs, so you can have more compact fixtures. The red wire runs from the relay to the “ON” terminal on the switch. If you don’t want to replace the light switch you can place the z-wave relay behind it. The Qubino relay that I mentioned earlier for the garden lights is really small and can be placed behind an existing light switch. Both line-voltage and low-voltage lighting systems have advantages. The Class 2 SLSLVS Series low voltage wall switches can be mounted in residential or commercial wall switch boxes. These devices often have photo cells or timers that control when the lights turn on, so you don’t have to flip a switch every night. Switches are commonly rated by the current they are designed to break, under specified voltage and power factor conditions, as this is the most stringent limitation. LED models provide pilot lights or status outputs. Kyle provides low low voltage switches, switch plates, transformers, and low voltage relays control low voltage lighting, including replacement parts for Remcon low voltage lighting systems. Spotlights and hanging fixtures are just the ticket for task lighting that illuminates a specific area — say for grilling or for reading (Figure 1). Safety lighting is used on stairs, transitions, and spas (Figure 2). Mini recessed lights that fit into holes drilled along stairs are another option. While much more expensive than the off-the-shelf options, these Lutron ELV dimmers have indeed got rid of the noise and dim the lights effectively. It works with Google Home and Alexa and allows you to control the lights from your phone or with your voice. That is why I used a smart z-wave relay and normal outdoor light fixtures. The company explains that production of Pyramid light switches, wall plates, and controls were later replaced by Remcon products: both were discontinued by 2011 but compatible relays are available. Electronic transformers also step down 120 V~ line voltage to 12 V~ or 24 V~. This is done with electronic circuitry which is capacitive by nature (capacitance is the ability of a device to store energy in the form of an electric field). Freight shipping may be required for heavy or oversized items, which includes large lighting fixtures and furniture. A wide variety of fixtures provide general, decorative, accent, and safety lighting. Extremely low readings indicate a bad connection somewhere in the system or too many lights on a circuit. Some fixtures have a light-emitting diode (LED) instead of an incandescent lamp as the light source. GE low voltage light switches have been updated since the 1950’s. We rarely think about it beyond flipping a switch when the sun goes down, however, there are many lighting options available that not only change the ambiance of a home or space but can also be more cost-effective and safer. The reason being that most systems use mechanically latching relays for the branches. These plates will not work with your old bracket – the new switches are a different size than the old ones and therefore won’t fit properly into your old bracket. Pressing the low-voltage switch operates a relay which in turn switches on or off a 120V light or other device in the home. 120V AC relay: This relay looks very similar, but look closer and you’ll see the coil is energized by 120 volts AC. Ratings for coil voltage and max switching current are usually printed on the side of the coil enclosure. You’ll need to extend a circuit and add the dimmer switch and an outside GFI receptacle outlet for the transformer(s), or possibly run a new circuit with the dimmer switch and GFI receptacle. As it stands now, you can’t just swap out LEDs and put in incandescent lamps; the fixtures are different. This makes it possible to control the lighting from any number of locations, including a central switching console. There have been a number of occasions when we’ve been called out because a heavy layer of new mulch was covering up all the lights. Browse our large selection of low-voltage wall switch plates, remote control relays, switches, solenoids, brackets, mounting straps to find original GE, Remcon or Touch-Plate equipment compatible with your new or existing low voltage wiring system.

Product Description LVS low voltage switch, Type: Latching, Number of Buttons: 2, Pilot: No Pilot, Color: Light Almond. LED fixtures cost a lot more than similar ones that use incandescent lamps, and the variety of styles of fixtures with LED light sources is pretty limited. Touch-Plate® switches only have two wires. Each button provides a momentary contact that is intended for use with compatible low voltage relay panels or similar lighting control panels or devices. On decks requiring multiple circuits and transformers, using loops from the transformers to the more distant circuits can eat up a lot of cable. Think of Relays as electrically powered switches, that are often employed by control circuits to energize larger loads, or otherwise isolate circuits. The low-voltage electrical wiring system popularized in the United States by GE® and Remcon permits the use of less-costly and easier-to-install wiring between the relays and the switches in the home. Used this switch to control LED tape lights that required two drivers. Still, larger systems (20 or more fixtures) have larger voltage drops so it’s good to equalize voltage whenever possible. Regular incandescent dimmers often contain a small amount of DC voltage, which is harmless to a regular incandescent load but may damage magnetic transformers. Use plastic wire clips with stainless steel nails to secure the landscape lighting wire to the tree every 3 ft. Two light switches in one box. Single-Pole Dimmers provide control from one location. At least one supplier continues to design, sell, and service low-voltage home wiring systems: Touch-Plate Lighting Controls, in Fort Wayne IN. Some of the suggestions and opinions in this article are quoted from or paraphrase advice offered by that company. First, find a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet to act as the connection point between your home and the outdoor lights. Lay everything out, hook up your lights, test your voltage, and look at your results at night before burying the lines. Product Description LVS low voltage switch, Type: Latching, Number of Buttons: 4, Pilot: No Pilot, Color: Light Almond. LVSW-100 Series Low Voltage Switches are lighting control devices that use conventional point-to-point low voltage wiring for control of single or multiple loads. Newer Touch-Plate low voltage switches, for example, will work in older General Electric (GE), Remcon and Bryant low voltage systems, so they are a great compatible replacement option for many. A switch of basically the same design is also used on Australian power outlet wall-plates. Nowhere in the product description did it mention a relay control. If you can turn your outdoor lights on and off with a light switch then you have two options. The relays, in turn, are connected to manual switches with low-voltage wires. Dimmers for magnetic low-voltage transformers use a technology known as standard phase control or leading edge,” whereas dimmers for electronic low-voltage transformers use reverse phase control or trailing edge.” Standard phase control is for use with either inductive (MLV transformers, fans) or resistive (incandescent) loads. Each of those lights can be automated with the right smart products. 3. Certain MLV transformers may not be compatible with all Lutron® dimmers. Lutron® ELV dimmers are designed specifically for the special electrical requirements of electronic transformers. MLV transformers with built-in input chokes or debuzzing coils” may not be compatible with certain microprocessor-based dimmers. I see 3 wires twisted, so power in, power out, and power to switch. Once you know your transformer will work with your light fixtures, look for other convenience features. The relay are more common to go out than switches but both fail. Low voltage fixtures consume the same amount of power as other lights, but they often produce more brilliant beams. Many original GE® or Remcon® low voltage lighting systems are still in use today. Each lighting load to be controlled is wired through a relay. However, the higher shock and electrocution hazards of line voltage, combined with fewer fixture choices, make me favor low-voltage systems for smaller projects. First, for Touch-Plate® installations, If the relay you are replacing has two wires coming out of the cylinder the relay is a 1550 series and it can be replaced by the Touch-Plate® 2500-B. Depending on the application, transformers can ‘step up’ the incoming voltage (microwaves, arc welders) or ‘step-down’ transformers such as those on the telephone pole in your neighborhood. To minimize voltage drop, I get the power to the first fixture on a 10-gauge cable, and from there create a loop of 12-gauge cable in the area where the fixtures are located. If none of your lights are coming on, the best place to start is the transformer (the metal box all the lights are hooked up to).
